October 2018

Chapter 10…October

Be thankful, take some time and watch the leaves turn.

——————————————————————————————–
October Fun Facts

  • Germany’s Oktoberfest originally began on October 17, 1810, the wedding day of King Ludwig I.
  • Dayight Savings Time ends every year at 2:00 A.M. local time on the last Sunday of October.
  • When deer are in a grey coat in October, expect a hard winter.
  • Much rain in October, means much wind in December
  • A warm October means a cold February
  • The first Thanksgiving feast in the U.S. was held in 1621 when the Pilgrims celebrated their harvest. However, the Americans did not invent Thanksgiving. English navigator Martin Frobisher held a celebration of thanks in 1578 in what is now Newfoundland as he had survived the long journey over the seas.

Not So Hollow Farm News

October is still a great time to plant trees and shrubs. We are still operating with normal hours (9am-
5pm Thurs – Sat) through the month of October. Stop in for trees, shrubs or tasty treats!

Basil Bumper Crop

Our pesticide-free veggie garden provided a bumper crop of basil this year which we recently harvested
and turned into some delicious products.

Herbes Salees make a great seasoning addition to stews, ratatouille, soups, marinades…

Our basil salts (purple & green) are great as a finishing salt to any dish – try them on homemade focaccia
– delish!   Both purple ruffle and Genovese basil jellies pair wonderfully with cheese.

All make great gifts and are available at our farm kiosk.

Lifeactually – A Photography Exhibit – Photography by Pete Paterson

Sunday, October 28th – 2pm opening. Runs until December 23, 2018
Life isn’t easy. We set goals, face challenges, overcome hurdles and try to hold onto our Vision. We keep going, because we each bring something to this world that no one else has in exactly the same way. Some of the greatest barriers people face are the stereotypes about what it means to have a developmental disability. These photographs remind us that there are more things that tie us together than hold us apart. They are about LIFE at its best – finding meaning and joy in our relationships, our work, our hobbies, and our communities. They are about the ways that we all contribute to making the world a stronger and more vibrant place.

September Arrives In The Hills

Make It A September To Remember!

——————————————————————————————–
September Fun Facts

  • September comes from the Latin root septem-, meaning “seven,” because in the original Roman republican calendar September was the seventh month of the year rather than the ninth
  • In 1752 September only had 19 days.  The 3rd-13th were omitted in the change from Julian to Gregorian calendars.
  • The Harvest Moon is closest to the fall equinox. The Harvest Moon was named because it rises within a half-hour of when the sun sets. When farmers had no tractors, it was essential that they work by the light of the moon to bring in the harvest.

In this day and age of technology and mobile devices, kids have lost touch with nature, and as a result are losing valuable skills.  Heads are down, swiping screens and pushing buttons sitting on couches…automation is stealing creativity, problem solving and social skills.  It affects the classroom and our communities.

We have a solution!  Join us!  We will help support you and rebuild the connective tissues that make education meaningful.  We want to help you create great kids and great communities!

Bruce Trail Day!

September Hiking!

The Dufferin Hi-Land Bruce Trail Club is pleased to be holding our annual Bruce Trail Day at the beautiful Bruce Trail Conservancy (BTC) owned Splitrock Narrows property, located at 755437 2nd Line E in Mono, between 25 and 30 Sideroads. Yes, we know this is not technically a Mulmur event, but 2/3rds of the Dufferin Hi-Land section is in Mulmur, and many of our members, volunteers and folks who use the trail do live in Mulmur. Plus, it is only five minutes south of Highway 89.

At this free event, there will be guided and self guided hikes, activities for children, such as wildflower seed spreading and bird box building, and a barbeque. Plus the first 20 new members that sign up that day will receive a copy of the 29th edition Bruce Trail Guide, a 40 dollar value. The Splitrock property is a perfect place to showcase the conservation aspects of the BTC, and is a wonderful place to walk, with looped hikes through the exposed escarpment, wonderful views over the countryside from the cliff edge, and – of course – the unique 200 metre long Splitrock Narrows, a twelve foot deep chasm carved out of the rock.

Please show your support for the Bruce Trail by joining us, and tell all of your friends.

Important Information

PSA – Anyone who is bitten by a tick should take the tic to the Public Health Unit in Orangeville because they can get the results almost immediately.

This is being sent out to the Dr’s in Dufferin County and will prevent people having to take the anitibiotics if the Doctor is not sure.  So the important information is to take the tick specimen to the Public Health Unit in Orangeville.

Head To Woodfield Farm For The Long Weekend!

August Long Weekend

For the long weekend we will have fresh forest raised pork. If you haven’t tried “The Foraging Pig” pork, raised at Woodfield Farm, then you are missing out on delicious. We will have chops, tenderloin, shoulders, sausage… and of course bacon.

We also have fresh Woodfield Farm raised lamb in assorted cuts and if you are a burger conosuer, we recommend lamb burgers topped with lamb bacon and dressed with spicy tomato jam.

It will be a hot civic holiday and as a refresher we have prepared gazpacho soup made with Ontario field tomatoes, cucumbers, The Easy Farm peppers and an array of herbs and spices.

Marion has been baking a mountain of Mulmur cookies in.preparation for the weekend Creemore and Mulmur markets. These are a customer favourite made with buttery shortbread and chunks of Toblerine chocolate.

With our extra zucchini from the garden we will be featuring   chocolate zucchini loaf with a dark chocolate Toblerone ganache. These will be available throughout the zucchini season, as unlike anyone else, we seemed to have mastered growing this  particular vegetable. 😁

See you at the farm store!

July Facts & The Mystery of the Full Buck Moon

  • July was named by the Roman Senate in honour of the Roman general, Julius Caesar, it being the month of his birth. Prior to that, it was called Quintilis.
  • Traditionally, we have called July’s full Moon the “Full Buck Moon.” This name comes from our Indigenous and Colonial past when the Moon was used to track the seasons. Bucks are growing new antlers at this time. July’s Full Moon was also known as the Thunder Moon, because thunderstorms are so frequent during this month.

The Wonderful World of Woodfield Farm

Christmas In July

The turkeys are here and growing and wondering whose table they will be on for the Thanksgiving feast. If you are interested in reserving a turkey or a duck, please let us know and we will  make sure you have one thing off of your future list.

There are still a few spots left for the cheese making course on July 10th, at the farm. If you are interested in attending send a note to Saskia, the cheese maker, at info@justsaycheese.ca to get details and sign up.

We have pigs ready to go to market and will be available in whole, half or quarters, for the freezer. Our pigs are heritage breeds and raised outdoors in a forest setting where they roam and root and are able to exhibit the natural instinctual behaviours  of a pig. The taste tells the tail.

If chickens are your favourite grill meat, our first batches of pastured chickens are here and available in whole roasters or as cuts.

The heat is full on but it’s cool in the farm store. We have fresh baking, Thursday through Sunday. If your craving a spinach bacon and cheese hand pie, come by for a quick snack to go. We are also serving up delicious locally roasted coffee. Raisin scones, chocolate chip or oatmeal walnut raisin cookies are part of the Friday line-up. Saturdays include cinnamon buns, fruit loaf, home made sausage rolls and freshly baked berry pies, perfect for one or two (if you want to share).

AND….If you haven’t got time to make jam, we have made it for you.  Choose from strawberry rhubarb or if you are feeling adventurous, carrot cardamom…..YUM!!!

See you at the farm store!
